Celebrating Our Veterans: Flightless Honor Flight

On June 8th, the CommuniCare team was proud to host a “Flightless Honor Flight” event for veterans from the Cincinnati and Dayton areas. Designed for veterans who are unable to travel to Washington, D.C., this special day recreated the spirit of the traditional Honor Flight experience at home, at our office in Blue Ash, Ohio. It was a day filled with remembrance, gratitude, and celebration. The event brought together veterans, volunteers, community members, and civic leaders to honor the sacrifices made by the men and women who served our country.

The day began with CommuniCare and Honor Flight employees arriving early to prepare. The meeting space was transformed to resemble the beginning of a real journey to D.C., complete with gate signs, as well as departure and arrival boards. The room came to life with photos of historic D.C. landmarks and cherry blossom trees, creating an immersive experience that captured the spirit of the Honor Flight.

Healthcare facilities from across the Cincinnati and Dayton areas went above and beyond to make the veterans’ journey to Blue Ash special. Buses were decorated with patriotic flags, red, white, and blue streamers, and heartfelt messages on the windows. Many veterans were accompanied by loved ones, including children, grandchildren, and other family members, while others arrived with trusted caregivers from their facilities.

Upon arrival, veterans received commemorative t-shirts and name tags, and were escorted to their seats, where light snacks and water were served by our volunteer “flight attendants.” The ceremony began with bagpipers, followed by the national anthem and other patriotic songs performed by the Cincinnati Christian School Assembly Choir. Personal stories and remarks were made from local leaders, including Honor Flight’s Dee Daniels, Blue Ash Mayor Jill Cole, and Founder and Chairman of CommuniCare Family of Companies, Steve Rosedale. They all reminded us why we had gathered: to say thank you.

In a video message from Steve Rosedale (RA 15744675, Third Battalion, 7th Infantry), who served in Vietnam 20 clicks south of Saigon. He welcomed the veterans home and shared his own story. He spoke about how quickly soldiers had to adapt, rely on each other, and form unbreakable bonds. “One thing we knew is we had each other’s back,” he said. “Now we depend on each other as well.” Reflecting on the difficult transition home, he acknowledged their sacrifices: “You put in your time, your heart, your hands, and in many cases, your blood.” His message ended powerfully with: “Welcome home, vets. We’re proud of you.”

The highlight of the day came during the Welcome Home Parade. Guests lined a path in front of the building, waving flags, holding signs, and cheering as each veteran passed through. Veterans were presented with letters from Mail Call, a commemorative challenge coin, and a refreshing popsicle treat. The Blue Ash Fire Department raised an American flag from their ladder truck, while a touching memorial wall stood nearby, designed to mirror the many war memorials found in Washington, D.C.

Reflecting on the day, Lieutenant Patrick Pyles of the Blue Ash Fire Department shared: “It was truly an honor to be a part of such a great event to honor our nation’s veterans. It was most definitely a heartwarming event and an awesome tribute to the men and women that gave so much to our country.”

Cheryl Hammons, CommuniCare’s Director of Veteran Programs and Services and Honor 360 coordinator, echoed that sentiment. She brought the Honor 360 program to CommuniCare with a clear mission: “My hope for the event was simple—that every Veteran would leave feeling seen, appreciated, and honored. I truly believe we achieved that and more. This is the heart behind Honor 360, a program created to recognize and support CommuniCare’s Veterans every day, not just on Veterans Day.”

From start to finish, the event was filled with connection and deep appreciation for those who served. The Flightless Honor Flight was a powerful reminder of how meaningful it is to recognize and celebrate our heroes through moments like these, moments that make them feel seen, valued, and truly special.
