Meet our Caring Hearts: Dorothy Dixon

With 46 years of nursing experience, Dorothy Dixon stands as a testament to unwavering dedication and passion in her profession. Currently serving as a charge nurse at Evergreen Crossing & the Lofts, her journey continues to inspire the next generation of those in her field.

Dorothy’s desire to care for others began early in her childhood. As a little girl who grew up in rural Indiana, Dorothy tended to injured stray animals. She was influenced by her mother, a caregiver, and her grandmother, who suffered a stroke and whom Dorothy cared for during her high school years.

Over the past four decades, Dorothy’s nursing experience has spanned various specialties, including med/surg, surgery, pediatric, home health, agency and rehabilitation/long-term care. Each area presented unique challenges and learning opportunities, contributing to her well-rounded and extensive skill set.

She has experienced numerous rewarding moments, finding ultimate fulfillment in witnessing patients recover and preparing to return home or to previous facilities.

“I can recall a patient that I cared for that had an above-the-knee amputation,” Dorothy said. “I saw how the patient coped with the new life adjustment from not being able to walk to now being able to walk with a new prosthetic leg device to discharging to a new apartment. This was a very proud moment for me.”

Adapting to changes in the medical field has been a constant. Over the years, she has experienced the transformation of technology, from the shift from paper MAR (Medication Administration Record) to digital MAR to the introduction of HIPAA policies in conjunction with technological advancements. She vividly recalls the initial challenges and fears associated with these changes, especially the transition from manual IV drip rates to automated IV pump machines.

As a seasoned nurse who now trains and mentors others, Dorothy emphasizes the importance of listening to patients’ concerns, being a critical thinker, seeking guidance when in doubt and nurturing a genuine desire to care for people.

Beyond her professional life, Dorothy has been happily married for 54 years, raising five children and welcoming 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She prioritizes quality time with her family, emphasizing the balance between her personal and professional life.
